The first time I left the South (United States), it was in 2006 and the State of Oregon. If you’ve never visited Oregon, you’re absolutely missing out. This state is breathtakingly beautiful with numerous mountains, countless interesting waterfalls and quite unique hikes.

On my first Oregon trip, I visited a tiny coastal town called Yachats (YAH hots). I was instantly in love and to this day, I typically refer to it as my favorite small town in the country. About three hours south of Yachats is the tallest mountain on the Oregon Coast – Neahkahnie Mountain.

The first time I attempted Neahkahnie Mountain was in December 2019 on a solo trip. If you’ve travel-hiked before, you probably know that you cannot easily predict the weather. Mountain hikes are particularly tricky. Do you still want to do that long mountain hike if all you can see is clouds at the top? If I’m only doing it for exercise, then maybe yes. But otherwise you’ll want to consider other options. In that case I ended up hiking nearby Cape Falcon.

Thankfully the second time is a charm! February 21, 2022 was the day. The Oregon Coast is regularly cloudy. Because it was partly cloudy, we elected to complete the shorter hike up and the fog creates some beautiful photos as always …

Sun and fog. Always does the trick. Not to mention the mossy, lush-green landscape common in most of the state.

Along the way I noticed a striking symmetrical perspective between two trees…

But in the end, some hikes are largely what I call “destination hikes”. The hike up is a woodsy beautiful but the jaw dropping views are reserved for the top of the mountain…

The clouds parted for an absolutely majestic view. The rocks you see in the foreground? That’s largely the surface area at the tip top of the mountain. You have room for a handful of people and that’s it.

This was a hike I had been looking forward to for many years. Thankfully the clouds parted briefly for some amazing photos of this hike. Oregon, man. This state never disappoints me.
